Nicole Spencer

Executive Director, Heroes in Transition, Inc.

Bolstered by broad experience in education, business and nonprofit leadership roles, Nicole Spencer is the first-ever Executive Director of Heroes In Transition, Inc. (HIT), a 501(c)3 based in Mashpee, MA. Since 2016, Nicole has spearheaded the daily operations and strategic growth of HIT, including directing the capacity building efforts to expand HIT’s staff, facilitators, and volunteers, as well as guiding fundraising and outreach efforts.

During Nicole’s tenure, HIT has experienced significant programmatic and financial growth as Nicole’s personal connection to the organization has deepened. Nicole’s brother Adam, a Marine who served in Iraq, was the first veteran on Cape Cod to receive a service dog from HIT.

In 2016, Nicole combined her running expertise and passion for HIT to co-create the Ruck4HIT relay race which now serves as HIT’s largest fundraising event. Initially a race from Ground Zero in New York City to Falmouth, MA, with 12 runners and 4 drivers rucking 41 hours, Ruck4HIT is now more than 20 teams strong and boasts upward of 225 participants running through all 15 towns on Cape Cod over a 30+ hour timeframe. This signature endurance event is characterized by the added challenge of participants wearing weighted rucksacks to symbolize the burdens carried by Veterans, Active Service Members, and Military Families.

A 2003 graduate of Emmanuel College, Nicole holds a Master of Arts in teaching and she taught 7th grade math before starting a family. As a stay-at home mom, Nicole became involved in the nonprofit sector by volunteering for a variety of organizations and serving on a local nonprofit board. Nicole’s love of running led her to become a running coach and she is the owner of In Motion Training. From 2015 to 2019, she served as the Volunteer Manager of the ASICS Falmouth Road Race. Nicole has run in seven Ruck4HIT relays, including the inaugural run.
Nicole is a seasoned public speaker who brings energy, positivity and authenticity to her presentations. A 2017 Cape & Plymouth Business “40 Under 40 Award” winner for dynamic leadership, Nicole was named an Unsung Hero by the Mashpee Chamber of Commerce in 2023.
