John P. Curley of Osterville has joined the board of directors of the Cape and Islands United Way (CIUW), a nonprofit organization on a mission to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of our communities to advance the common good on Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket. Curley, vice president at the HILB Group New England, was elected recently by a unanimous vote of the board of directors. Curley currently chairs the Cape and Islands United Way annual golf tournament.

“John and the Curley family roots run deep in Osterville and he has a vast network of local friends and clients, giving him a unique perspective on the challenges facing our residents in need,” said Dick Fairbanks, chair of the board of directors. “These local roots and his work ethic will be a material plus for the United Way.”

Curley, the youngest of seven children, is a graduate of Florida Southern College where he earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing with a minor in sports management. During his college career, Curley was named by Golf Magazine as the number 6 amateur golfer in the U.S. He competed for 10 years in various golf tours, including the PGA and Nationwide Tour.

When he retired from professional golf, Curley returned home to the Cape where he has spent the last 15 years working with the HILB Group, previously Dowling & O’Neill Insurance. He is a member of the board of the Cape Cod Insurance Agents Association.

“I am truly honored to be part of the United Way as the golf chair and now a member of the board,” said Curley. “My goal is to add to the mission by giving my insight, dedication, and building relationships. Thank you for the honor.”
