Heroes In Transition (HIT) is bolstering its development department with the addition of Silene Gordon of Bourne, who will serve as the nonprofit’s marketing manager. Gordon brings more than 25 years’ experience in marketing, storytelling, and business development to her role at HIT.
“We are so excited to welcome Silene to the HIT family. Her talent and passion for our mission will elevate our work and allow us to expand our reach and visibility throughout the region,” said HIT Executive Director Nicole Spencer. “We’re welcoming Silene at the perfect time as we’re celebrating our 15th anniversary. This year represents an opportunity to not only look at where we’ve been but look forward to where we’re going. Silene will help us move forward in achieving our strategic goals.”
“When I found out about this opportunity, I thought what a great way to contribute to an organization that does absolutely remarkable work,” said Gordon, whose father, the late Louis Irving, was a Korean war veteran. “My family and I get to live in this incredibly free, beautiful country because of the sacrifices our service members and their families make. It is something that has always resonated with me and it started with my dad.”
Gordon will be responsible for overseeing the marketing strategy for HIT which assists service members, veterans, and military families throughout Cape Cod and the Islands. The nonprofit was formed by Cyndy Jones and her late husband, Kenneth, following the death of their only son, Marine Captain Eric A. Jones, who was killed in a helicopter crash while flying a combat mission in Afghanistan in October 2009. HIT honors Jones’s life, service, and sacrifice through 14 programs which assist nearly 1,500 individuals on an annual basis.
Gordon comes to HIT after having spent the past two-and-a-half years at MassHire Cape & Islands Workforce Board where she was its business development coordinator. Prior to that, she spent nearly two decades as a journalist for several Cape-based media outlets.
She is also the co-founder of The Little Boat Quote Co., a small business that creates hand-held sailboats emblazoned with whimsical and inspirational quotes on the sails.
Raised in Wareham, Gordon earned her bachelor’s degree in communications from St. John’s University. After spending the early part of her career in New York City and Boston, she returned to the Cape in 1998.
She and her husband Rupert, a science teacher at Falmouth High School, have two children, Natalia and Louis, both of whom live in Boston. She is a 2022 graduate of Leadership Cape Cod and currently serves on the board of Philanthropy Partners of the Cape & Islands. She is a past president of the Bourne PTA and St. Margaret’s Regional School PTO, and is a founder of Bourne-Mashpee-Wareham (BMW) Girls Ice Hockey.
